Make 2022 your year for improved fitness – and you don’t have to do it alone!

Scerbo Physical Therapy > Physical Therapy > Make 2022 your year for improved fitness – and you don’t have to do it alone!

By Dr. Frank J. Scerbo, PT, DPT, CSCS ///

It’s January of a brand new year, a time when most of us will resolve to make changes for the better. Topping many “to-do” lists are health-focused resolutions like eating better, losing weight, and getting more active. There’s a lot you can do to prevent chronic disease, avoid injury, improve your fitness, and age well. Unfortunately, staying motivated for self-care can be hard when we’re up against the demands of everyday life.

But this year can be different. With ScerboPT specialists as your fitness partners, we’ll help you set goals you can reach, and stick to. With an individualized fitness plan using appropriate techniques, you’ll see benefits in health, energy, and outlook. We’ll help you stay motivated and encourage your progress as you begin to realize your gains. If you’re an athlete (or want to be) we will be with you every step of the way to create and follow a safe and effective training regimen.

Staying active is key.
It’s never too late to get moving. Studies have shown that adding physical activity at any age has real benefits. In addition to an increased life span, adding the recommended amount of physical activity for your age and ability to your daily routine can help you manage stress, improve memory and brain function, avoid chronic disease, and much more. Scerbo physical therapists are movement specialists who will help you find the best kinds of activity for you.

But I hate exercise.
To be effective, physical activity doesn’t have to involve things you don’t like doing. Sometimes people think of exercise as a chore or take on too much too quickly, which can lead to burnout and injury. Your Scerbo physical therapist can help you discover the types of activities or sports that you enjoy and gradually make them part of your physical activity routine.

I’m always too tired to exercise.
This seems to be a hurdle for many people, but research shows that exercise actually boosts your energy levels. Physical activity helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to our tissues and vascular system, and other body functions work more efficiently. Physical activity also improves brain function and mental health, lowers anxiety, promotes better sleep, and aids in weight management. All of these enhance energy and lead to feelings of well-being.

I work out when I can but never reach my goal.
Finding the right plan for you is essential to your success. If you are having trouble meeting strength and conditioning goals, despite your best effort, a Scerbo physical therapist can work with you to identify any issues and design a program to maximize your movement and enhance performance.

I worry about injury
ScerboPT is with you as your partner in developing a Physical Conditioning program that is safe and works well for you. At our Edgewater facility, we offer the new Biodex Balance System SD to help you improve balance, increase agility, and develop muscle tone, with the broadest range of treatment options. You may also be screened with our comprehensive Fall Risk Screening & Conditioning Program and Protocol, which can identify patients of any age who are at increased risk of falls. For more info on these programs go to Balance Assessment & Conditioning. Our physical therapists know how to help our patients prevent injury, and your well-being is always our primary concern.

Remember, you do not need a doctor’s referral to see a physical therapist in New Jersey. Come into Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation to discuss your fitness goals, and start the New Year off right – you’ll be glad you did!
