Balance Assessment & Conditioning

Older adults, young athletes, and post-surgical and concussion rehabilitation patients are among those who can benefit from our Balance Assessment and Conditioning program. In addition, our Fall Risk Screening and Conditioning Program helps prevent fall-related injuries before they happen.

Our physical therapists treat a variety of conditions related to pain caused by falls and can work with patients to identify and address those risk factors that can put them at a higher risk for falls.

We offer state-of-the-art assessment and safe and effective treatment using The Biodex Balance System SD to improve balance, increase agility, and develop muscle tone, to help our patients improve quality of life and safely return to play.

The system also helps our therapists identify and overcome challenges that many people face in order to improve their health and physical performance, whether pre – or post-injury. It provides objective data and provides accurate printed progress reports throughout assessment and training.

Biodex Balance System SD

The Biodex Balance System SD has been designed to meet the needs of everyone looking to improve balance, increase agility, develop muscle tone and treat a wide variety of pathologies.  The system provides a fast, accurate Fall Risk Screening and Conditioning Program for older adults and sport athletes; closed-chain, weight-bearing assessment and training for lower extremity patients, and adds the objective balance assessment component to a concussion management program.

Fall risk screening and conditioning

The Balance System SD includes a comprehensive Fall Risk Screening & Conditioning Program and Protocol, consistent with American Geriatrics Guidelines. We can identify a person at risk to fall in just two minutes by comparing their balance test results to age-dependent normative data.

Senior rehabilitation

At Scerbo, we are trained to understand the complex physiology of older adults. As part of the Balance & Mobility series, the Balance System SD addresses age-related diseases by aiding in increasing mobility, addressing fall risk, improving balance, developing muscle tone, and increasing agility

Neuro Rehabilitation

The training exercises of the Balance System SD are geared to improve strength, range of motion, gait and balance for those patients suffering from neurological disorders associated with Parkinson’s, Stroke or Peripheral Neuropathy. With the Balance System, we can accurately measure and document a patient’s tendency to lean to one side or the other. This information helps us determine a comprehensive course of treatment.

Vestibular (Balance) Disorders

In addition to its use in rehabilitation, the Balance System SD is an ideal evaluation tool for patients experiencing vestibular issues. Balance retraining exercises are designed to steady a patient while walking or standing through improvements in coordination of muscle responses and organization of sensory information. To assess a patient’s balance, we do static and dynamic tests and compare their results to normative data. We can then develop an individualized exercise plan to meet the needs of each patient.

Sports Medicine / Orthopedic

The Biodex Balance System documents weakness and challenges patients to improve. We use the various test modes to evaluate the athlete while at rest and in motion. Results show deviations from target performance and how much time an athlete spends in a particular quadrant. We then compare performance data to normative data that is built into the system. Based on these objective measures, we can develop an effective training plan to help each athlete improve their performance

Sports Injury Risk & Concussion Management

The Biodex Balance System SD assessment for concussion management helps manage specific sports injuries and determine safe return to play.

The assessment for concussion management is used by high school, college, and professional sports teams to unravel the mystery of concussion and bring together best practices. It provides a performance baseline against which post-injury performance can be compared, aiding with return-to-play decisions.

The system also serves as a valuable training device to enhance athletic ability and help compensate for impaired proprioceptive reflex mechanisms following injury. Using this unique device, your Scerbo therapist can assess neuromuscular control as indicated by your ability to maintain dynamic bilateral and unilateral postural stability on both static and unstable surfaces.

Measuring Balance

Assessment of balance remains an important part of any concussion management program. A decreased ability to maintain postural sway is one of the hallmark signs of concussion that often persists after cognitive symptoms subside. Biodex technology supports the assessment from baseline to post-injury with a detailed progress report to track recovery for an objective, return-to-play decision.

Balance Technology

Your Biodex Balance Assessment is made using either the versatile Balance System SD or portable BioSway. The Balance System SD is a sophisticated measuring and training device for static and dynamic balance testing and training. The BioSway is a portable balance device with a static-only platform.

Measuring Postural Sway

The objective data provided by measuring postural sway allows your therapist to quantify the elements of balance and compare baseline to post-injury performance. In addition, test results from a healthy population of student-athletes are stored in the device for comparison with general normative data. Detailed summary and progress reports help us track your recovery and provide you with quantitative data to assist with the return-to-play decision.

Advantage Software Supports Hamstring Protocols

Hamstring injury is serious business. Regardless of whether you already have a process for protecting and strengthening your hamstrings, the objective test protocols offered with the Biodex System 4 will provide valuable, isolated muscle-performance data. Test results, combined with established targeted outcomes, can be used for pre-emptive injury screening, managing rehabilitation and determining readiness for return to play.

Our Biodex Fall Risk Screening & Conditioning Program can identify potential Risk Factors in just two minutes. Those identified can be entered into the Conditioning Program to reduce the risk.
