Move into the New Year with Orthopedic Physical Therapy

Scerbo Physical Therapy > Physical Therapy > Move into the New Year with Orthopedic Physical Therapy

By Dr. Michael E. Pomykala, PT, DPT, CSCS //

Here in Edgewater as well as other parts of New Jersey, we’ve had our first winter snowfall. For all the sometime beauty of snow and ice, activities like shoveling, winter sports, and falls can result in injury. This winter, we want you to know that if you suffer an injury, or need orthopedic surgery, our certified doctors of physical therapy at Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation are professionally qualified to help with your recovery.

Our orthopedic physical therapy treatment focuses on improving the function of your musculoskeletal system—those very important muscles, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments. If you have an illness or injury to any part of your body that is affecting your ability to move or conduct daily activities, you may benefit from outpatient physical therapy.

Tools in our therapy toolbox include:

  • Assessment and evaluation
Your therapist will start your treatment with a thorough evaluation that looks at your symptoms, how you move, the quality of that movement, and how this affects your daily life. You will be assessed regularly for level of pain, range of motion, strength, balance, and posture.
  • Therapeutic modalities
Therapies such as heat, ice, water, laser, electrical stimulation, dry needling, and ultrasound are used to improve your blood flow and flexibility, reduce swelling, increase relaxation, and most importantly, reduce your pain level.
  • Mobilization and massage
Your therapist can use hands-on manual therapy techniques, including but not limited to soft-tissue massage, joint mobilization/ manipulation, and muscle energy techniques to relieve stiffness and improve pain, joint function, and muscle control.
  • Assistive devices
Devices such as canes, walkers, crutches, slings, and braces may be used during a session or recommended for you to use at home.
  • Exercise
Exercise is often the most challenging part of your treatment, but it is where you need to put in the most effort. Our physical therapist and aides will expertly guide you through this process.

At Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation, our orthopedic physical therapy treatments are focused on helping you build up your strength, flexibility, mobility, body awareness, and range of motion. As we move forward through the holidays into a brand-new year, our therapists are here to get you back on your feet and enjoying life again.
