Male physical therapist conducts a physical assessment with a young male patientOctober Is National Physical Therapy Month: Keep Moving, Feel Better, Live Stronger

Dr. Frank J. Scerbo, PT, DPT, MS, CSCS ///

October is National Physical Therapy Month, a time to recognize the essential work physical therapists do to help people move better, manage pain, regain strength, and improve their quality of life.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) celebrates National Physical Therapy Month by raising awareness about the importance of physical therapy and its role in helping people improve movement, function, and quality of life.

Whether you are an athlete recovering from an injury, an active adult experiencing joint pain, a senior working to maintain balance and independence, or someone preparing for or recovering from surgery, physical therapy can play an important role in helping you move with greater comfort and confidence.

At Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation, we help patients of all ages and physical abilities address pain, restore mobility, and return to the activities that matter most. This October, we encourage you to listen to your body, recognize the signs that something may be wrong, and take the first step toward feeling better.

Don’t Ignore Pain or Changes in How You Move

Occasional muscle soreness can happen after physical activity, but don’t ignore persistent pain, stiffness, weakness, or difficulty moving. These symptoms may affect how you walk, exercise, work, sleep, or complete everyday activities.

You may benefit from a physical therapy assessment if you experience:

  • Persistent joint or muscle pain in your back, neck, shoulders, hips, or knees.
  • Stiffness or a reduced range of motion that makes everyday movements difficult.
  • Pain or discomfort during exercise, sports, or routine activities.
  • Muscle weakness, reduced endurance, or difficulty returning to your usual activity level.
  • Balance problems, unsteadiness, or concerns about falling.
  • Ongoing discomfort following an injury, surgery, or a period of inactivity.

Addressing these concerns early can help identify contributing factors, improve movement, and reduce the risk of compensatory movement patterns that may lead to additional discomfort or injury.

You do not have to wait until pain becomes debilitating to seek help. A physical therapist can evaluate your movement, identify areas that need attention, and develop a personalized treatment plan based on your goals and abilities.

How Physical Therapy Helps You Move Better

Physical therapy goes beyond treating the site of your pain. It focuses on how your body moves and functions, helping address the underlying factors contributing to discomfort, weakness, and limited mobility.

Depending on your needs, your treatment plan may include:

  • Pain management: Therapeutic techniques and exercises to help reduce pain and improve comfort.
  • Strength and flexibility training: Targeted exercises to improve muscle strength, joint mobility, and functional movement.
  • Manual therapy: Hands-on techniques to address stiffness, improve mobility, and support recovery.
  • Balance and coordination training: Exercises designed to improve stability, confidence, and fall prevention.
  • Movement and functional training: Practical exercises that help you return to daily activities, work, sports, and exercise.
  • Injury prevention education: Guidance on body mechanics, posture, exercise technique, and movement strategies to reduce the risk of future injuries.

Your physical therapist will tailor your program to your condition, activity level, and recovery goals, helping you build strength and progress safely.

Orthopedic Physical Therapy: Before and After Surgery

Orthopedic physical therapy helps people recover from musculoskeletal conditions and injuries affecting the bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. It can be beneficial for sports injuries, overuse conditions, joint pain, and recovery following orthopedic surgery.

Pre-Surgical Rehabilitation: Prepare Your Body for Recovery

Preparing for surgery can be an important part of the recovery process. Also known as prehabilitation, pre-surgical physical therapy focuses on improving strength, flexibility, mobility, and physical conditioning before an operation.

Depending on your condition and your surgeon’s recommendations, pre-surgical rehabilitation may help you:

  • Build strength in the muscles supporting the affected joint.
  • Improve flexibility and range of motion.
  • Maintain or improve your overall physical conditioning.
  • Learn exercises and movement techniques that may be useful during recovery.

Building a foundation before surgery can help you prepare for rehabilitation afterward.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation: Restore Strength and Mobility

After surgery, a structured rehabilitation program helps you work toward regaining movement, strength, balance, and function. Your physical therapist will develop a progressive plan based on your procedure, healing, medical precautions, and individual goals.

Post-surgical physical therapy may help you:

  • Restore joint mobility and flexibility.
  • Rebuild strength and endurance.
  • Improve balance, coordination, and walking mechanics.
  • Gradually return to everyday activities, exercise, and sports.
  • Reduce the risk of compensatory movement patterns and future reinjury.

Whether you are recovering from knee or hip replacement, a sports-related procedure, or another orthopedic operation, following an individualized rehabilitation plan can help you make progress safely and work toward the best possible functional recovery.
