Female Physical Therapist Guiding Balance & Strength Training with Exercise BallThe Science of Better Movement: How Personalized Physical Therapy Restores Strength, Mobility & Independence

By Vanessa Baggio, PT, DPT ///

Whether you’re recovering from orthopedic surgery, healing from a sports injury, or struggling with persistent joint or muscle pain, your recovery deserves more than a generic exercise program. Successful rehabilitation begins with understanding how your body moves—and why it’s not moving the way it should.

At Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation, in Edgewater, New Jersey, we provide a patient-centered approach that combines advanced movement analysis, evidence-based manual therapy, and individualized exercise progression to help patients regain strength, mobility, confidence, and independence.

“Recovery isn’t just about healing an injury—it’s about restoring the confidence to move freely again,” says Dr. Vanessa Baggio, PT, DPT. “My goal is to understand how each patient moves, identify what’s limiting them, and create a personalized treatment plan that helps them return to the activities they love safely and confidently.”

Every Movement Tells a Story

Pain is often only one piece of the puzzle. Frequently, the underlying cause lies in the way your body compensates after injury or surgery.

A comprehensive movement assessment allows Dr. Baggio to evaluate:

• Joint mobility and flexibility
• Muscle strength and endurance
• Balance and coordination
• Walking and functional movement patterns
• Postural alignment
• Movement compensations that may contribute to pain or delayed healing

Rather than simply treating symptoms, she identifies the root cause of movement dysfunction to create a rehabilitation plan tailored specifically to your needs and goals.

The Power of Hands-On Physical Therapy

Manual therapy remains one of the most effective tools in orthopedic rehabilitation. When combined with therapeutic exercise, hands-on treatment can help accelerate recovery while improving overall function.

Depending on your condition, treatment may include:

• Joint mobilization techniques
• Soft tissue mobilization
• Myofascial release
• Stretching and mobility techniques
• Scar tissue management following surgery
• Neuromuscular re-education

These interventions are designed to reduce pain, improve mobility, restore normal movement, and prepare your body for progressive strengthening.

Exercise Progression That Evolves With You

Recovery isn’t about doing the same exercises every visit. As your body heals, your rehabilitation program should evolve with it.

Dr. Baggio carefully progresses each patient’s exercise program based on objective improvements and functional milestones. Every stage of rehabilitation builds upon the previous one to safely restore strength, stability, flexibility, and endurance.

Treatment plans may focus on:

• Restoring range of motion after surgery
• Improving core and joint stability
• Building muscular strength
• Enhancing balance and proprioception
• Correcting movement mechanics
• Returning safely to work, sports, or daily activities

This individualized progression helps reduce the risk of reinjury while promoting long-term success.

Expert Care Following Orthopedic Surgery

Physical therapy plays a critical role in maximizing outcomes after orthopedic surgery. Beginning rehabilitation at the appropriate time can help restore function while minimizing stiffness, weakness, and long-term limitations.

Dr. Baggio works closely with each patient throughout recovery following procedures such as:

• Total knee replacement
• Total hip replacement
• Rotator cuff repair
• ACL reconstruction
• Meniscus repair
• Shoulder surgery
• Foot and ankle surgery
• Fracture rehabilitation
• Tendon and ligament repairs

Each rehabilitation program is customized based on surgical protocols, healing timelines, and the patient’s personal goals.

Treatment for Everyday Musculoskeletal Injuries

Not every injury requires surgery. Many patients experience pain from overuse, repetitive stress, workplace demands, recreational activities, or simply the natural wear and tear of everyday life.

Dr. Baggio treats a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

• Neck and back pain
• Shoulder injuries
• Hip pain
• Knee pain
• Foot and ankle injuries
• Tendonitis
• Muscle strains
• Ligament sprains
• Sports injuries
• Balance and mobility impairments

Her goal is always the same: help patients move more efficiently, reduce pain, and restore the confidence to return to the activities they enjoy.

Why Early Treatment Matters

No two injuries—and no two patients—are exactly alike.

Age, lifestyle, occupation, activity level, previous injuries, and personal goals all influence the rehabilitation process. That’s why Dr. Baggio develops personalized treatment plans that reflect each patient’s unique needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

Whether your goal is returning to competitive athletics, keeping up with your children, walking without pain, or recovering after surgery, your treatment plan is designed specifically for you.
