September is Pain Awareness Month
By Frank J. Scerbo, PT, DPT, MS, CSCS //
Each September, pain specialists and advocates across the country raise awareness about issues related to chronic pain during National Pain Awareness Month. Chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans and can be difficult to explain to others because the condition does not exhibit any significant physical symptoms.
To help change this, each September we recognize and celebrate National Pain Awareness Month, a time to encourage discussions, promote education, and raise awareness about pain-related issues. Understanding more about the underlying causes of pain can help improve treatments and alleviate suffering.
Pain Treatment Options
Our physical therapists along with your physician can provide treatment options to pain management for most chronic common related pain issues. For us, as your physical therapists, we can treat pain through movement, hands-on care, exercise, and patient education.
Ways Our Physical Therapists Manage Pain:
- Exercise: Many studies have found that those who exercised on a regular basis, experienced less chronic pain. Our physical therapists will design exercises specific to your goals and needs.
- Manual Therapy: At our clinic, we have a hands-on approach to treating pain. From carpal tunnel syndrome to low back pain, this method can effectively reduce your pain and improve your movement. Our therapists will use manipulation, joint, and soft tissue mobilizations, as well as other strategies for your care.
- Education: Our certified therapists will talk with you to make sure they understand your pain history and help set realistic expectations about your treatment.
- Teamwork: We believe that being an active participant in your own recovery can impact your success. We will work with you to assess how your pain responds to treatment and together we will design a program that meets your individual needs.
At Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation we believe in an integrated approach that ensures all aspects of a patient’s pain are being addressed. Our physical therapy specialists will provide an individualized treatment plan while collaborating with your physician.
