By Frank J. Scerbo, PT, DPT ///

Every step you take relies on a complex system of bones, muscles, ligaments, and tendons working in sync. During National Foot Health Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to highlight just how essential foot health is—and how Physical Therapy plays a critical role in keeping you moving comfortably and confidently.

According to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), despite how common foot pain is, only about one-third of Americans seek care from a specialist. Foot pain isn’t just an inconvenience. Left untreated, it can impact your posture, mobility, and overall quality of life. The good news: targeted orthopedic physical therapy can address the root cause rather than just the symptoms. At our Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation clinic in Edgewater, NJ, we help patients with common conditions, including Plantar Fasciitis and Ankle Sprains.

Common Foot Problems

Foot issues can affect people of all ages and activity levels. Some of the most common conditions we treat include:

  • Plantar Fasciitis – Heel pain caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia
  • Achilles Tendinitis – Overuse injury affecting the Achilles tendon
  • Flat Feet or High Arches – Structural imbalances leading to pain and instability
  • Bunions and Toe Deformities – Misalignment causing discomfort and limited mobility
  • Ankle Sprains and Instability – Often recurring without proper rehabilitation

These conditions can worsen over time without intervention, making early assessment essential.

Our Treatments

Physical Therapy offers a non-invasive, highly effective approach to treating foot and ankle conditions. At our orthopedic clinic, treatment plans are customized and may include:

  • Manual Therapy – Hands-on techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce pain
  • Strengthening Exercises – Targeting intrinsic foot muscles and supporting structures
  • Stretching Programs – Improving flexibility in the foot, ankle, and lower leg
  • Gait Analysis & Training – Correcting walking or running patterns
  • Balance and Stability Training – Reducing risk of falls and re-injury
  • Custom Orthotic Guidance – Supporting proper alignment and pressure distribution

The goal is not only to relieve pain but to restore function and prevent recurrence.

Prevention Starts with Awareness

Healthy feet are foundational to overall wellness. Here are key ways to stay proactive:

  • Wear properly fitted, supportive footwear
  • Avoid prolonged standing without breaks
  • Stretch regularly—especially calves and arches
  • Strengthen foot and ankle muscles
  • Address pain early before it becomes chronic

Prevention is always more effective—and less costly—than treatment after the fact.

Community Awareness & Engagement

National Foot Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to prioritize education and action. Whether you’re an athlete, a working professional, or simply staying active day to day, understanding your foot health can make a significant difference.

Consider scheduling a screening, attending a local wellness event, or simply taking time to evaluate your daily habits. Small changes can lead to long-term benefits.
