Get Ahead of the Game: Why a Summer Sports Plan Matters for Young Athletes

By Frankie Goris, PT, DPT ///

As the school year winds down and the temperatures rise, summer sports season kicks into high gear in our Edgewater, New Jersey, and the surrounding communities. Whether your child is lacing up for soccer, baseball, track, or swim team, now is the perfect time to ensure they’re physically prepared for the challenges ahead. A well-structured plan isn’t just about performance—it’s about preventing injuries before they happen.

At Scerbo Physical Therapy & Sports Rehabilitation Clinic, we specialize in helping young athletes stay strong, recover faster, and play safer. Our expert physical therapists provide comprehensive care that includes Sports Rehabilitation and Injury Prevention, Pre and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation, and Blood Flow Restriction Therapy, customized strength and conditioning programs under the expert care of our certified physical therapy experts, designed to meet the unique needs of growing athletes.

Youth sports are competitive, fun, and a fantastic way to stay active. But without proper conditioning and injury prevention, young athletes are at risk for sprains, strains, and overuse injuries that could sideline them for weeks—or longer.

The best defense? A proactive plan that supports overall athletic development.

Our Sports Rehabilitation and Performance Training programs focus on the following seven key areas to promote safe and strong performance:

1. Balance and Conditioning
Quick turns, agile movements, and responsive reflexes all depend on good balance. We train athletes to enhance their body awareness and stability, enabling them to achieve better control on the field or court.

2. Gait Pattern and Posture
Poor posture and abnormal gait patterns can lead to chronic injuries. Our therapists assess and correct these issues early on, helping athletes move more efficiently and safely.

3. Flexibility and Mobility
Tight muscles limit performance and increase the risk of injury. We guide athletes through dynamic stretches and mobility routines that keep joints healthy and muscles limber.

4. Muscular and Cardiovascular Endurance
From warm-ups to the final whistle, endurance is key. Our tailored workouts improve stamina so athletes can maintain peak performance without compromising form.

5. Muscle and Joint Strength
Strong, resilient muscles and joints support explosive movements and reduce strain on vulnerable areas like knees and shoulders. We focus on age-appropriate strength-building exercises that protect and empower.

6. Range of Motion
Maintaining a proper range of motion enhances technique and reduces the risk of overuse injuries. Our team ensures that athletes can move freely and functionally in every direction.

7. Sports Injury Risk & Concussion Management
The program helps manage specific sports injuries and determine a safe return to play. At our clinic, we offer state-of-the-art assessment and safe, effective treatment using The Biodex Balance System SD. It is used by high school, college, and professional sports teams to unravel the mystery of concussions and bring together the best practices. It provides a performance baseline against which post-injury performance can be compared, aiding with return-to-play decisions.
