By Frank J. Scerbo, PT, DPT, CSCS ///

December 3rd marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. It is a moment to highlight the challenges people with disabilities face every day and to recognize the strength and resilience they show while navigating a world that is not always built with them in mind. At Scerbo Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation, we proudly serve many individuals with disabilities throughout Bergen County, New Jersey. This day matters to us because our mission is to help people move with more confidence, less pain, and greater independence.

One of the most effective ways we support our patients is through our Pre-Post Operative Surgery Rehabilitation program. Pre-Op Rehab prepares the body for surgery by improving strength, stability, and mobility. When patients build a stronger foundation before their procedure, they often recover faster and achieve better results afterward. For individuals with disabilities, this preparation can make an even bigger impact, since daily movement may already come with added challenges.

We also see patients after surgery who are ready to start their road to recovery and continue the good work they began with prehab. It’s essential to get moving again, to whatever degree is considered safe and beneficial, as soon as possible after a surgical procedure. Post-Surgical Rehabilitation offers a controlled environment for a swifter, less complicated recuperation by regaining strength and function, range of motion, muscular endurance, gait, joint strength, blood flow, and balance and coordination.

Many of our patients live with limited mobility, use wheelchairs, or manage conditions related to vision impairment or chronic pain. These challenges can lead to muscle imbalances, joint stiffness, or fatigue, which can complicate surgical recovery. Through personalized Pre and Post Surgical Rehabilitation, we help each patient improve strength, preserve range of motion, and condition the body to respond better to the demands of surgery and healing.

We also focus on practical skills that support daily function. This includes training to improve balance, safe transfers, and joint protection strategies, along with tools and techniques to manage pain from prolonged sitting, posture changes, or muscle strain. Every plan is tailored, and every goal is shaped around each patient’s abilities, limitations, and lifestyle.

As we join the World Health Organization in raising awareness today, we reaffirm our commitment to creating an environment where patients with disabilities feel heard, respected, and supported. Better outcomes begin with understanding what each person is facing and giving them the resources to overcome those barriers with confidence.

If you or someone you know is preparing for surgery or could benefit from targeted support, we invite you to learn more about our Orthopedic Physical Therapy programs.
